Andhra Pradesh’s Assembly and General Elections have happened on 11th April 2019 in the first phase of Indian General Elections. The State’s major parties are Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Yuvajana Shramika Raithu Congress Party (YSRCP), and Jana Sena Party (JSP).  Telugu Desam Party led by current Chief Minister of AP Chandra Babu Naidu is the leading party in the state and YSRCP led by Y S Jaganmohan Reddy is the principal opposition. Jana Sena Party led by Tollywood Actor Pawan Kalyan was introduced in 2014 and is contesting the elections for the first time.

Of the 175 seats, TDP had won in 103 seats and formed the government. YSRCP, the principal opposition had won 67 seats. National Parties INC and BJP were left with no leg to stand on in the state. In 2014 elections INC did not win in any seats and BJP won just in 4. TDP which was in alliance with BJP in the 2014 elections ended its alliance before the 2019 elections. With no alliance, it is highly unlikely that either of the national parties to win a significant number of seats.

The principal battle as was known is between TDP and YSRCP. JSP that is in alliance with CPI, CPI (M), and BSP might also win certain seats but would they be able to make a difference, is a question that remains to be answered.

AP Elections 2019

Andhra Pradesh Elections 2019 went on peacefully except in a few places where an EVM machine was destroyed and a man was killed in the conflicts between two major party workers. Repolling was conducted in five booths on 6th of May 2019.

After the elections, leaders of both the parties accused the other party of tampering with the EVMs. TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu had mentioned to the press that he will be filing a review petition for the counting of 50 percent VVPAT (Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail) slips while saying that EC had misled the apex court by filing a false affidavit that states 6 days are required to count VVPAT. The court has finally agreed to count VVPATs in 5 random EVM machines per constituency.

On the other hand, leader of YSRCP, YS Jagan had scheduled a meeting with the party candidates on the 21st of May. Sources say that the meeting has some strong suggestions to the party leaders to wait till the counting of the last vote as counting of VVPATs is mandatory this time.
